Getting to Jena by train from airports

There are two train stations in Jena, Paradies and West. Both stations are near the city center and have bus connections to the institute. Link for booking train tickets through Deutche Bahn below.

Arrival at Berlin-Tegel (TXL) Airport:

Take city bus (TXL) or taxi from the airport the the main station (Hauptbahnhof). From here the train goes to either Jena Paradies or Jena West. The train will either be direct or have 1 change in Erfurt. Estimated time 3 hours.

Arrival at Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF) Airport:

Take a city S-Bahn (S 45) to Berlin Südkreuz station (about 30 min). There will be at least one other transfer in Halle or Leipzig when going to Jena Paradies, or Erfurt when going to Jena West. Estimated time 3.5 hours.

Arrival at Leipzig-Halle (LEJ) Airport:

Generally take a city S-Bahn (about 10 min) to either Leipzig’s main station (Hauptbahnhof), or Halle Hauptbahnhof (this depends on the train time that best suits you). The train to Jena Paradies from Leipzig takes about 1-1.5 hours, and about 1 hour from Halle. Note there may also be a second transfer in Naumburg when going through Halle.

Arrival at Frankfurt (FRA) Airport:

Take the train from Frankfurt airport (Flughafen) to Jena West, with one transfer in Erfurt, the train may go directly to Erfurt from the airport or there may be a change at the Frankfurt main station (Hauptbahnhof). Estimated time 3.5 hours

Getting to institute via bus from train station

Jena Paradies (or city center)

Coming from the North (Berlin), South (Munich) or East (Dresden):

You arrive at the train station Jena Paradies. Take a short walk (west) to the city center bus terminal Teichgraben (5-10 min), stop located in front of Schäfer's Bakery. The bus lines number 10, 11, or 12 with the directions Damaschkeweg, Beutenberg Campus, or Göschwitz; go to "Beutenberg Campus" (6th stop). Turn right to Hans-Knöll-Straße and walk straight uphill. At the top take a left turn towards the MPI for Biogeochemistry (last building with circular tower).

Jena West

Coming from the West (Frankfurt/Main) or sometimes North (Berlin):

You will arrive at the train station Jena West. Exit platform towards Westbahnhofstraße, cross the street to the bus stop Westbahnhofstraße and take one of the bus lines 10, 11, or 12 (generally all of the buses from this station will go towards the campus) with the directions Damaschkeweg, Beutenberg Campus, or Göschwitz; go to "Beutenberg Campus" stop (5th stop). Turn right to Hans-Knöll-Straße and walk straight uphill. At the top take a left turn towards the MPI for Biogeochemistry (last building with circular tower). See map below.

Getting to Jena by car

North-South direction:

Autobahn A9, at the junction Hermsdorfer Kreuz change to Autobahn A4 direction Erfurt - Frankfurt/Main. Take Exit 53 at Jena Göschwitz and drive towards Jena city center (Zentrum) on road B88. Take a left turn into Winzerlaer Straße, and follow this road and the signposting to Beutenberg Campus. Turn left into the Campus area and follow the Hans-Knöll-Straße uphill. At the top take a left turn towards the MPI for Biogeochemistry (last building with circular tower).

East-West direction:

Autobahn A4, take Exit 53 at Jena Göschwitz and drive towards Jena city center (Zentrum) on road B88. Take a left turn into Winzerlaer Straße, and follow this road and the signposting to Beutenberg Campus. Turn left into the Campus area and follow the Hans-Knöll-Straße uphill. At the top take a left turn towards the MPI for Biogeochemistry (last building with circular tower).

Local transport

Transit tickets can be purchased on board any bus or tram. Machines have an English option, but will only take European debit cards or coins, no bills, with the exception of machines at main stations (such as Löbdergraben or Paradiesbahnhof). Those traveling from the same hotel may want to purchase the group-day-ticket, which costs 10.00 € and covers up to 5 people.

Coming from the city center (or Jena Paradies station):

Take a short walk to the city center bus terminal Teichgraben. The bus lines number 10, 11, or 12 with the directions to Burgaupark, Damaschkeweg, Beutenberg Campus (Ammerbach) and Göschwitz, stop located in front of Schäfer's Bakery. Get off at stop "Beutenberg Campus" (6th stop).



Turn right to Hans-Knöll-Straße and walk straight uphill. At the top take a left turn towards the MPI for Biogeochemistry (last building with circular tower).
